Strokes or Shading? How to Choose Between Combo Brow and Powder Brows
✓ Reviewed by You-jung Kang — Lead PMU Artist, CHAEUDA · Last updated: October 14, 2026 · Reading time: 6 min

Some brows need more than hair strokes but would look too heavy with shading alone. Combo Brow is built for exactly that in-between, and at CHAEUDA, a semi-permanent makeup studio in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, it is one of the four brow techniques on the Combo Brow service menu designed around your own face.
This guide explains how Combo Brow works, who it suits, and how to fit it into a short trip to Seoul.
Quick Answer: Combo Brow combines two semi-permanent techniques in a single session: hand-drawn hair strokes from the brow head to the midpoint, and soft shading from the midpoint to the tail. The result is natural texture at the front and fuller depth toward the tail. Most sessions are completed in one visit. Individual results may vary.
What Is Combo Brow?
Combo Brow is a semi-permanent brow technique that layers hair strokes and shading on the same brow. Fine strokes run from the head through the midpoint to add natural texture, and soft shading fills from the midpoint to the tail, where brows tend to thin out naturally.
The strokes are drawn first, then the shading is layered in. At CHAEUDA every stroke is drawn by hand, with no stencils or pre-drawn designs, and the artist maps the exact point where strokes end and shading begins.
How Is Combo Brow Different From Microblading or Microshading Alone?
Combo Brow differs because it uses both techniques on one brow, while the others use only one. Microblading draws strokes only, microshading builds shading only, and Nano Brow uses a finer needle for strokes only.
Technique | How it works | Finish |
Combo Brow | Hair strokes at the front, shading through the tail | Natural texture at the head, fuller depth at the tail |
Microblading | Hand tool creates fine, hair-like strokes | Natural shape and definition |
Nano Brow (Hair Stroke) | Finer, closely set strokes | Denser, natural hair-stroke finish |
Microshading | Powdered dots build a soft fill | Soft, fully filled-in look |

Who Is Combo Brow Best Suited For?
Combo Brow is best suited for people who want fuller, more three-dimensional brows than strokes alone can give. It is often the answer when hair strokes feel too subtle but a fully shaded brow feels too heavy or flat.
Combo Brow is a good fit if you:
Want fuller, more three-dimensional brows
Find hair strokes alone not quite enough
Have very sparse natural brow hair and want both texture and coverage
Are undecided between a hair-stroke finish and a powder finish

What Happens During a Combo Brow Appointment at CHAEUDA?
A Combo Brow appointment at CHAEUDA moves through four steps, all with lead artist You-jung Kang. Each step is planned around how much texture you want at the front and how much depth at the tail.
Consultation — you discuss where you want texture and where you want depth.
Design — the shape is sketched together, and the transition point from strokes to shading is mapped.
Application — strokes go in first, then shading, with topical numbing applied throughout.
Aftercare — you receive a short healing guide, and a touch-up is scheduled once the color has settled for guests who can return.
Most guests describe the sensation as light pressure or scratching rather than pain.
Can You Get Combo Brow on a Short Trip to Seoul?
Yes. Most Combo Brow sessions are completed in a single visit, and for guests coming from abroad, the strokes and shading are built fully in the first session because a return visit is often impractical.
Consultations and aftercare are available in English, Japanese, Chinese and other languages. Slots are limited, so booking a few weeks ahead helps, especially in peak travel seasons.
How Should You Prepare for Combo Brow?
Preparing for Combo Brow takes a few simple steps in the days before your visit. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and blood-thinning medication for 24 hours beforehand, skip retinol or exfoliating products on the brow area for about a week, and arrive with your brows unshaped so your natural growth is visible.
If you already have old brow tattoos or PMU, suitability depends on the existing color, saturation and shape. Faded or light work can often be softened and reshaped, while heavy or dark ink may need lightening first, so sending a photo in advance helps. If you have known sensitivities, the US FDA’s fact sheet on tattoos and permanent makeup is a useful reference to read before your consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Combo Brow hurt?
Numbing cream is applied before the session. Most guests describe light pressure or scratching.
How long does Combo Brow last?
Combo Brow is semi-permanent. The pigment sits in the upper layers of the skin and fades gradually, and Seoul-based guests usually return for a touch-up once fading begins.
How many sessions do I need?
Usually one. Guests based in Seoul can schedule a touch-up after healing.
Is Combo Brow safe for sensitive or acne-prone skin?
A quick skin check is done at consultation. If there is active acne, eczema or irritation in the brow area, the session waits until the skin calms; outside a flare-up, sensitive skin is generally fine.
Who should avoid Combo Brow?
It is generally not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain skin conditions or blood-clotting concerns. A consultation confirms suitability.
How is pricing handled?
Pricing is confirmed after consultation, based on your brow condition and the look you want.
